Mayfield Warehouse Fire: Initial inquiries suggest a major blaze that destroyed a Mayfield whitegoods warehouse on Monday is not suspicious. Around 60 firefighters contained the inferno on the corner of Denison Street and Maitland Road, which forced the initial evacuation of 30 homes. Residents are urged to contact the EPA if they find potential debris contamination. Read more. |
M1 Extension & Regional Traffic Alerts: Ongoing construction on the M1 extension will trigger lane closures and 40km/h speed zones at Beresfield, Black Hill, Tarro, Tomago, and Heatherbrae during day and night shifts through May 22. Emilio's Nebbiolo Wine Lunch - The Junction
Emilio's in The Junction ran a Nebbiolo Wine Lunch last Sunday and we were lucky enough to be invited along. Five courses, five wines, three hours, and we walked out having absolutely no need for dinner that evening.
Neither of us had really spent much time with red wine before this; Nebbiolo was new territory for both of us. Each wine paired well with its course, and it worked throughout; everything complemented each other well, and by the end, we had a much better appreciation for what the grape can do. The event was centred around Piazzo, an Italian winemaking family, with Simone there on the day to share stories about the wine and the winery.
Despite it being a ticketed event with a full room, we still had a table to ourselves, which made it feel like a proper date night rather than a group dining experience. The food was excellent across the board, three smaller dishes to start, followed by a mushroom ravioli and Osso Buco as the mains. All generous, all high quality, and the kind of spread that made the three hours disappear without noticing.
Emilio's is somewhere we hadn't visited before this and it won't be the last time. They seem to run these events periodically throughout the year, and if another one lands on the calendar, we'd strongly recommend getting on it. We'll be heading back for the regular menu soon, too, if Sunday was anything to go by; it'll be worth writing about.

Newcastle's Quest for the Best - The Results Are In
Last week we asked you to vote for the next category and it was close — but Newcastle's Best Pie edged it out, with Best Pub Special not far behind. So that's where we start. Pub Specials will get their turn next.
Now we need your nominations. Where does Newcastle's best pie come from? A bakery you've been going to for years, a hidden gem, somewhere that doesn't get enough credit, we want to know. Submit your pick below and once nominations are in, I'll get eating.

Knights hand Holbrook the perfect revenge
A satisfying Sunday for Justin Holbrook, his Knights beat the Gold Coast Titans 36-12 at Suncorp Stadium, the club that sacked him back in 2023. Newcastle trailed just 6-6 at half-time before running in six second-half tries to one.
Dom Young was the standout with a hat-trick, Greg Marzhew sparked the second-half blitz with a 90-metre intercept try, and Fletcher Sharpe chipped in with a double. Kalyn Ponga had a mixed day with four errors but still threw the final pass for Young's third.
Seven wins from 11 under Holbrook. The turnaround is real.
Jets' season ends in penalty heartbreak
Newcastle's remarkable season came to a gut-wrenching end on Saturday night, beaten by Sydney FC in a penalty shootout in front of 25,082 at McDonald Jones Stadium. The Jets had fought back from a goal down, Eli Adams equalising in extra time, but couldn't find a winner, losing the shootout 4-2 as Sydney goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares denied Grozos and Bertoncello.
A shattering end to what has been the best season in the club's recent history. The Premier's Plate and Australia Cup are already secured, but the grand final was the one that got away.
Sydney FC head to Auckland for next weekend's decider. The Jets head into the off-season with plenty to be proud of, and plenty to chase next year.
